Karate is a dynamic and powerful martial art. The trained practitioner is able to co-ordinate mind and body with such precision that a tremendous amount of physical power can be generated at will, often when at a disadvantage in size and physical strength. Because of this, karate has become well known as an efficient system of self defence, and for some people this is enough, but fighting is only one aspect of the art.

Diligent practice will improve co-ordination, timing and confidence, as well as improving your fitness and making your body stronger. Training is hard work and this builds a strong spirit whilst cultivating a calm and tolerant temperament. There are other benefits too, but you will discover these for yourself. There are many different styles of Karate, some of which are traditional and others which are modern, each with their own merits. We practice a traditional style of Karate called Goju Ryu. The study of Goju Ryu will appeal to both men and women of all ages because it can accommodate a wide variety of individual abilities and help you develop those you do not already possess.

KANRYO HIGAONNA
In the nineteenth century Kanryo Higaonna Sensei mastered Chinese boxing and combined it with the local Okinawan system of "Te". The system became known broadly as "Naha-Te".
CHOJUN MIYAGI
After Kanryo Higaonna Sensei's death in 1915 his top student Chogun Miyagi Sensei developed "NahaTe" into Goju-Ryu.
Sensei trained under Chojun Miyagi Sensei from 1938 until his death. At the request of his peers, the responsibility for teaching Goju-Ryu then passed to Eiichi Miyazato Sensei. In 1957 he established the Jundokan Dojo in Asato, Naha City, Okinawa. In 1972 he retired from the Police Force and built a new Dojo (place of "the way" or training hall) and devoted himself to teaching Goju-Ryu Karate.
